How to Prepare Your Home for Back-to-School: 6 Simple Organizing Projects That Make School Mornings Easier

As summer comes to an end, many families in Glynn County begin preparing for a new school year. Between shopping for supplies, coordinating schedules, and getting everyone back into a routine, it's easy to feel overwhelmed before the first day of school even arrives.

As a mom of four, I know firsthand how quickly school mornings can become hectic. Over the years, I've learned that the secret isn't having a perfectly organized home—it's creating simple systems that make everyday routines easier. These are the same organizing strategies I use in my own home and recommend to my clients throughout Glynn County.
The good news is that a few simple organizing projects can make mornings less stressful and help your family transition into the school year with confidence. Whether you live in Brunswick, St. Simons Island, or elsewhere in Glynn County, these six projects will help create a home that supports your family's daily routines.
1. Create a Drop Zone Near the Door
One of the first steps in back-to-school home organization is creating a drop zone near the door your family uses most often. Instead of backpacks, shoes, lunch boxes, and sports equipment ending up scattered throughout the house, give each item a designated home.
Hooks for backpacks, baskets for shoes, and bins for sports gear make it easy for everyone to know where their belongings belong. Having everything ready to grab on the way out the door means fewer frantic searches for missing items and a smoother start to the day. The simpler the system, the more likely everyone in the family will stick with it.
2. Refresh Your Pantry for Easy Lunch Packing

Packing lunches becomes much easier when your pantry is organized with convenience in mind. Take a few minutes to discard expired food, combine duplicate items, and create categories for snacks, breakfast foods, lunch ingredients, and grab-and-go options.
Using clear bins or labeled baskets allows everyone to quickly find what they need while making it easier to see when supplies are running low. Keeping lunch containers, reusable snack bags, and water bottles together in one location also saves valuable time during busy mornings. A well-organized pantry helps simplify one of the most repetitive tasks of the school year.
3. Organize Kids' Closets Before School Starts

Before buying new clothes for the school year, spend some time editing each child's closet. Remove clothing that no longer fits, donate items they no longer wear, and organize what's left so getting dressed becomes easier.
One thing I do throughout the summer is declutter my kids' closets as I'm putting away their laundry. Instead of waiting for one big closet cleanout, I remove clothes that are outgrown, stained, or simply worn out a little at a time. By the time school shopping rolls around, I have a much better idea of what each child actually needs. I can quickly see if they're short on shorts, need more everyday shirts, or have plenty of pajamas. It makes back-to-school shopping more intentional and helps avoid buying duplicates we don't need.
4. Set Up a Homework Station
Homework doesn't require an elaborate home office, but it does benefit from having a dedicated place where supplies are always within reach. A rolling cart or portable homework caddy works well because it can easily move to the kitchen table, dining room, or wherever your family prefers to work.
Stock it with pencils, crayons, scissors, glue sticks, calculators, chargers, headphones, and any other frequently used supplies. When everything has a designated place, children spend less time searching for materials and more time focusing on their assignments. Having a consistent homework station also helps establish a daily routine that supports success throughout the school year.
Another system I'm planning to implement this school year is a four-tier paper tray with one slot for each of my four children. As they come home from school, they'll be able to place permission slips, graded papers, artwork, and anything else that needs my attention into their designated section. Instead of papers piling up on the kitchen counter, I'll have one organized place to review everything at the end of the day. I love this idea because it gives each child their own "paper inbox" while keeping important documents from getting lost in the shuffle.
5. Create a Family Command Center
With school comes permission slips, practice schedules, doctor's appointments, volunteer events, and countless papers that need your attention. A family command center gives all of this information one central location instead of letting it pile up on kitchen counters.
Your command center doesn't have to be elaborate. A family calendar, a place for incoming papers, a small basket for forms that need to be returned, and a weekly meal plan can make a tremendous difference in keeping everyone on the same page. When the entire family knows where to find important information, daily routines become much easier to manage.
6. Declutter Last Year's School Supplies

Before heading out to purchase new school supplies, take inventory of what you already have. Test markers and pens, sharpen pencils, throw away dried-out supplies, and gather reusable items in one location.
You may discover you already have plenty of notebooks, folders, scissors, rulers, or art supplies that can be used again this year. Organizing your existing supplies not only saves money but also prevents unnecessary clutter from accumulating in your home. It's a simple project that can make back-to-school shopping much more intentional.
