According to a Garage Living article (source), "50% of people claim the garage is the most disorganized space in their home." This number isn't all that surprising. All it takes is driving through any neighborhood in the Golden Isles, and it is easy to see that many of our garages have issues with organization primarily due to the shear amount of stuff we store in our garage...
So what do you do if you are one of the 50% that claim their garage is the most disorganized space in their home?
Well... you could contact Southern Sort to get your garage organized without the hassle of any of the following tips BUT if you are a DIYer and enjoy the challenge, read on for a few tips to help get your garage transformed from a glorified storage unit back to it's original purpose - vehicle storage.
Here are some tips to get you started!
Declutter First - There is no point in trying to organize your clutter, especially in a garage. What is clutter exactly? Anything that we don't need, use, or is taking up valuable space. Depending on the amount of stuff you have in your garage, take everything out to start with a blank slate. If the garage is too overwhelming, break the garage into 4 sections and focus on 1 section at a time. Get rid of items that you no longer want/need.
Create Zones - After you have decluttered, sort items into like categories and create zones. Some common zones include: tools, garden supplies. sports equipment, outdoor toys, pool toys, or seasonal/holiday items. Decide what is the most practical area for those items. For example, you probably wouldn't store seasonal items close to the garage door. You would probably store outdoor toys closer to the entrance of the garage so it is easier for the kids to remove their toys then place them back once finished playing.
Use Vertical Space - Vertical space can be utilized via garage storage solutions or shelves. Anything that can help get your stuff off the floor can be valuable to the organization of your garage. One of my favorite systems include the Rubbermaid FastTrack. We used this system for a client who's main goal was to get stuff off the garage floor. Invest in Quality Storage Solutions - Durable storage solutions can make a big difference. Consider sturdy shelves (like the one pictured), industrial grade bins, and clear, weather-proof containers that make it easy to see what's inside. Label each container to make finding what your need easier. Trust me from experience, go for the sturdy shelves verses the cheaper wire shelves. They end up being a pain to store garage items and never seem to remain organized.
Do routine maintenance - This means that once a month or once a quarter complete a quick declutter to keep your garage from getting too unorganized again. Create a habit of putting supplies back where they belong after you finish with them. When you use a garden tool, hang it back on the Rubbermaid FastTrack System instead of leaning it on a wall.
Organizing your garage may seem like a daunting task, but with a clear plan and a little effort, you can create a space that is both functional and tidy. Remember, the key to maintaining an organized garage is regular upkeep and staying committed to the system you've put in place.
Check out some of the garage transformations that Southern Sort has had the pleasure to complete.
Client #1 requested that items be stored off the floor of the garage. Southern Sort was able to install a Rubbermaid FastTrack to better use the vertical space and limit the amount of stuff on the floor of the garage.
Client #2 had years of clutter that so many of us deal with. After several sessions, some great decision making from my client, and use of the tips outlined above, Southern Sort was able to transform their garage from a storage unit to a space they can now park their car.
We even found all of her wreaths and made them easily accessible for her year-round.
Which is what I love most about organizing. Not necessarily the wreath part, but being able to help clients find and organize some of their favorite things and declutter the things in your home that bring about stress and disorganization.
