How to Create a Functional Drop Zone for Your Family

July means we’re halfway through summer, and if you’re a parent, you may already be thinking about the upcoming school year. Along with the excitement of new routines and fresh starts comes the return of something many families dread—paper clutter and daily chaos at the door.

Lately, I’ve heard from so many families that their biggest pain point is managing incoming paper and drop zone clutter. And let’s be honest—even the most organized person can get overwhelmed by the daily influx of mail, school forms, backpacks, and shoes. For a busy household, it’s easy for things to pile up fast.

But here’s the good news: you don’t need a huge mudroom or fancy system to stay on top of it all. You just need a simple, functional Drop Zone.

Why create a drop zone?

  • Keeps clutter from spreading into the house - like kitchen counters or tables.

  • Saves time - everything has a place

  • Reduces stress - no more stress-induced mornings locating your items

  • Easier for kids and spouses - everyone is on the same page of where essentials belong

So, how do you get these benefits in your home? Follow the below steps!

Step 1: Pick the Right Location

The right location is going to vary based on the needs of your family and layout of your home.

The most logical place for the drop zone is a mudroom or entryway area, but I understand that not everyone has a space like this in your home. You may have to use a wall in your laundry room or garage.

If space is still limited, think outside the box. A corner of the kitchen, hallway, or back of a door can work for the drop zone.  And as much as I hate to admit, some items may not all be able to be stored in one location (like shoes and backpacks).

Step 2: Organize by Category - Find solutions for each category using the below strategies.

Mail & Paperwork:

Wall-mounted file folders, hanging file bins, baskets, or stacked drawers work great for mail and paper work.  Your solution for paperwork depends on the location you chose along with the specific needs of your family.

These clear stackable drawers work great for sorting mail, important documents to return to school, or other artwork. Added bonus - they are clear and easy to label.

The hanging file system below works great for sorting important documents and action items for your family. You can label these for each family member or create broad categories.

This black hanging system is easy to label and works if surface space is limited. These are great to hang in entryways, laundry rooms, kitchens, offices, or any other common area for your family.

Obviously the type of paper organization solutions are endless. The type of system you use to manage paper really doesn't matter. Don't overthink it, just pick a something that works in the location you chose in step 1 and implement - preferably before the end of summer.

Keys & Wallets:

Simple hooks and trays work great for these items. Again, what you use for these items depends on the location. If you only have a wall, use hooks. If there is space on a table, possibly beside your paper management system, use a tray. Create a system and stick to the routine of place these items here daily.

Purses, Bags & Backpacks:

A sturdy, multi-hook system would work great for these items on the wall. If you have a dedicated mudroom with cubbies, you probably already have hooks for these belongings.

If you are limited on wall space or room in your desired location, I personally have used sturdy Command Hooks for these items inside of bedrooms. Bags can get bulky, so depending on your space, a better location may be in the bedrooms or closets.

Shoes:

Depending on the system you have for your home, you may need a basket or shoe shelf for commonly used shoes for your family.

Some families may want shoes by the entry door, some may want them in closets. Find what works best for your family, but regardless of where you choose, have a dedicated drop zone so all members of the family are on the same page.

Seasonal or Miscellaneous Items:

Make a list of special items you may want close to the door. These could include dog leash, sunglasses, hats, gloves, etc.

Determine the best solution for each item. For example, a dog leash may work better on a hook or seasonal items may work better in a basket.

Step 3: Make it easy to maintain.

  • Label bins and hooks so everyone in the family knows where things go.

  • Set a daily habit for a quick 5-minute tidy up as you enter the house each day. This will ensure each category gets to it's rightful spot.

  • Limit what stays in the zone. If you notice the shoe pile getting to cluttered, only allow one shoe per family member. Or if your paper system is getting crowded, be more thorough about sorting and trashing mail.

  • If space allows, keep a trash bin nearby to toss junk mail and paper that isn't important. Yes, this includes the insane amount of paper that gets brought home from school. You don't need to keep everything - only the most special items.

As you begin to create a drop zone or command center for your family, remember that simple is best. A system that is too complicated is not easy for young kids (or really anyone) to maintain.
