Life gets busy and clutter seems to accumulate almost effortlessly. Whether it's cardboard boxes from online shopping, tangled electrical cords, or expired food in the pantry, clutter can quickly overwhelm our living spaces and our minds.
BUT Decluttering doesn't have to be a daunting task. In fact, with just a little effort , you can take back your space and your sanity. Let's discuss six things you can declutter today to pave the way for a happier, more organized life.
1. Cardboard Boxes: Those Amazon boxes that pile up in the corner? (Guilty 🙋♀️) It's time to recycle them. Or maybe you're still holding onto an old iPhone 6 box, iPad box, or empty shoe boxes. Recycle them today. Not only will you free up valuable space in your closets, drawers, kitchens, garages, etc., but you'll also rid yourself of unnecessary clutter.
2. Electrical Cords: I kid you not. My husband and I moved with a stash of cords from one apartment to the next. We never used a single cord, because we never knew what they belonged to. So I finally decluttered them when moving into our home, and I haven't needed one since.
If you do find it difficult to get rid of cords, take some time to figure out what they can belong to. Label them with painter's tape. Still can't find a match?... You know what to do.
3. Expired Food in Your Pantry: Take a moment to look through your pantry and dispose of any expired food items. Not only will this free up space for fresh groceries, but it will also ensure that you're consuming safe, high-quality products. Your pantry will be cleaner, more organized, and ready for meal time.
If you have items in your unexpired items in your pantry that you never opened (and if you're honest with yourself, you probably won't ever use), consider donating them to a food pantry. It will help cut back on some waste.
4. Cosmetics and Toiletries: We've all been guilty of buying cosmetics or toiletries on a whim, only to let them gather dust in the back of a drawer or cabinet because they didn't work for our skin type. Take stock of your collection and part ways with anything you don't use or need. You'll not only declutter your bathroom but also simplify your daily routine.
5. Paper Piles: My oh my how the paper piles can accumulate in our home. Take control of your paperwork by sorting through them and organizing or shredding unnecessary documents. Consider digitizing important papers to reduce future clutter and make them easily accessible whenever you need them; however creating digital paper piles will be a more time-consuming task than just tossing in the trash or a file folder to organize.
6. Clothing that no longer fits: Be honest with yourself and sift through your wardrobe and your children's clothing. Donate clothing that no longer fits or suits your style. Not only will this free up space in your closet, but it will also make getting dressed each day a more enjoyable experience, with only clothes that make you look and feel your best.
Decluttering doesn't have to be a daunting task. By tackling these six areas today (or this week), you'll take a significant step towards a happier, more organized life.
So set a timer, roll up your sleeves, and get to work.
Your future self will thank you for it. Remember, a clutter-free space is a clear mind. So what are you waiting for? Let's declutter and make room for the things that truly matter.
